I've never seen anything quite like this affecting such a wide range of species at once. While the symptoms are fairly typical for a high fever, without the equipment to run the tests I'd have liked, I can't help wondering if it isn't a magical property instead. It's not uncommon for fog or mist to be the first sign of entering someone's territory, after all.
