[Cedric sits in his sleeping spot at Oran's low-tier housing. In the background, there are still some of his molted feathers from the last two months, albeit in a much smaller and less unwieldy stack. Much more organized is the sparkling collection of trinkets, at which the Murkrow gazes proudly before speaking to the Grumpearl.]

Good morning, fellow people- er, Pokémon. For those who don't know me, you may call me Cedric the Great, Cedric the Sensational, or just Cedric if you prefer.

Now when Siffrin and I located Delcatty's friend Furfrou, they thanked us in the form of this rock.

[He holds up a talon containing, you guessed it, a shiny rock.]

Despite the feline getting this somehow, they couldn't tell me what it is, and because the archives are utterly useless, nothing I could quickly dig up there proved informative either. I can only presume it pertains to the type we call Fire since, well look at it.

Therefore, if anyone else can enlighten me on this thing's properties, it'd be most appreciative. For such an apparently valuable gift, I would love to know what exactly I can do with it.

See the fire symbol on it? It contains the knowledge for powerful Fire-type spells. If you concentrate on unlocking that magic, you'll absorb the stone and become an even stronger mage than you are, Cedric the Sensational!

... or are you okay just being 'Cedric the Average'?

If it's a fire rock, then is it hot at all? I bet that's a great thing to have with all this cold weather, they probably wanted you to stay warm.

No, I am not a dragon. And I don't think "fire rock" sounds particularly delectable.

I can only imagine it's an evolutionary stone.

[He digs out his own Shiny Stone for emphasis, pristine, polished, and not something he's eager to let go of.]

As I've come to understand it, certain Pokémon require external resources in order to evolve. For instance, the Pokémon Eevee has multiple potential evolutions, several of which are determined by elemental stones.

Aw. Sounds to me like you aren't even that interested in pioneering this research, Cedric the Picky!

Alas, it looks like a flame, but on the outside there's not a trace of heat. Maybe if I broke it, there would be fire, but then it could just as easily explode or burst into smoke, couldn't it?

Please, Flowey, fire tricks are done by even the most amateur stage performers. Even if your suggestion is true - which I struggle to believe it is - why would I resort to mere flame-eating that could burn the Spire down?

[He squints at the pearl; what is she, exactly? Looks like a toddler trapped in an oversized rabbit costume.]

P-point being, I'm not going to resort to something that destroys the thing - and possibly also my stomach - just on the chance that it might react magically. I've heard of such stones in the Mystic Isles that explode if you throw them right, why would I want that in my mouth?

[Hearing the apology is when it occurs to Cedric that he might be talking to a child, and oh darn, now he feels bad. Pesky feelings, getting in the way of his pride...]

Qu-quite all right, I suppose such names are less common in these parts.

It is pretty, isn't it? [He gives the rock a gentle, almost manic-looking smile.] That's probably why Delcatty finds it valuable. But I just have an inkling that there's more to it than that... if it's magical, maybe such a fire would burn forever, but then how do you activate it? This may call for some experiments.

That is a Fire Stone! It is necessary for certain species of Pokemon to evolve, but you are not one of them!

[ So like, trade it away or sell it or something? He might advise further, except that this person seems like a lot! He just got away from Melli! ]

[And then Akechi shows his- oh. Oh, that's a very pretty stone, isn't it? With something of that beauty, it must be a precious mineral indeed...

So, when you say 'evolve', you mean take on a new form? Like physical adaptation only faster? And it can be done in different ways?

[Wonder why this 'Eevee' would have so many routes... and how many others are the same way...?]

[ Ugh. Odile's disdain is really not very subtle through the Pearl network, but unfortunately this is indeed relevant to her ongoing inquiries. And apparently this...individual knows Siffrin, so she may as well get acquainted too. ]

You rescued that Furfrou as well? I did so last month with a different group - they gave us a different type of stone as a reward. I suppose they didn't mention that?

Finally, an expert! [Uh oh.]

So I was right about the typing- which means it would benefit a Fire-type Pokémon, I'm guessing... or perhaps change them into a Fire-type...

[Wait a minute.]

[Oh what a wondrous thing for Catrina to encounter for her first Pearl interaction. Clearly, that shiny rock thing was for eating and Catrina was gonna make sure its a known fact.]

Dude, just eat the damn rock, you clearly need your minerals.

[Catrina's knowledge on birds, much like mammals, is not great. Catrina is a former necromancer, not a vet, don't judge her.]

Most of the Pokemon who evolve using Fire Stones are fire types, yes! Though there are exceptions, such as Eevee - Eevee is an exception to a great many rules!

[ Someone else already got into them a bit, though, so. ]

Quite a bit! Murkrow are native to the region I was living in prior to coming here. [ Not...the region he's from, exactly. But nevermind that. ] You would require a Dusk Stone to evolve, although I am not...entirely certain that it would work. Evolution seems to be strange among us off-worlders...by my judgement, there are quite a few of us that ought to have evolved already, yet no one has.

[Why does this one seem annoyed? Oh well, not his problem, he's got enough crap to deal with.]

I suspect they didn't feel the need - or, perhaps, Delcatty just thinks they look pretty. Which, admittedly, they do.

Oh, they do. It certainly seems Delcatty does, since she thinks they're valuable even without any purpose. But back in the EverRealm, not all rocks were mere accessories, and I think I'd know a magic one when I see it...

[Okay, that stare is starting to distract him.]

Yes, this 'Eevee' is evidently a special case...

[And then he pauses, his eyes widening.] I can evolve?

[He sort of stares off into the distance. What does evolved Murkrow!Cedric look like? Is he a big, strong eagle-like bird that can lift several trees into the air? Some avian version of a flying horse? Heck, maybe he'll be a dragon, just not a fire-breathing one - maybe one of those sea dragons with Psychic abilities and insanely-powerful water jets-

Oh right, there's a second part to that. Oof.]

I should have known there was a catch. How does one know when to evolve exactly? Besides the stones, of course, when they actually work.
